Okay, so maybe there's no it in election.. The Internet Industry Association has put together a page giving a run down on the IT-related policies of all the major parties. Worth a read, since it's really a briefing on R&D and education policies. I just realised the other week that I should be voting not just from a personal perspective, but also as a IT-industry small business owner. Which makes it all much more complicated. Bring on November 10, so we can get it all over with.

Love the new vodafone ads on tv. Great, simple concept; perfect execution; and amazingly effective visuals. Not bad music either. Manages to take something as boring as a mobile phone no-contract plan, and make it all warm and fuzzy like a big happy freeing life-changing decision. Love it.
Not a fan of the "no agggro!" girl tho. Everything else? Beautiful.

Listening to Madonna's CD 'Music' at the moment. Not bad at all, I think it'll definitely grow on me. Ray of Light had some great tracks, but had some equally annoying ones. Music seems much more uniform, and as always one part Madonna and one part whatever musical styles are in right now. Very talented musician.
And I love the clips for the singles off Music. Don't Tell Me remains one of my fave clips of 2000. Check out the link for screengrabs/video. Same company also worked with Guy Ritchie on the clip for 'What It Feels Like for a Girl' which got the press whipped into a pretty out of proportion frenzy.
What's spinning in your player at the moment?

A collaborative art project that's a poignant, sad and at the same time, beautiful idea: the six thousand project.

On a tip from April, we headed down to Mojo's in Fremantle to check out the cd launch for Perth three-piece Closer. They were amazing live, it's always great to see live music, especially in such an intimate setting. Added bonus was Healthway's sponsoring the event, meaning it's a smoke-free gig. Legends! Check out some photos from the night.

Question asked tonight: do you prefer metal coathangers, or plastic?
Answer: I'm coathanger agnostic.
What about you?

Been a big fan of US company Method's work (not to be confused with Australian web shop Method, who are now minus the madness apparently). Happy me just discovered their website, with photos and video of all their work, which includes big name corporates, and big names in music! Sweet!

Two movies I like the sound of, one out soon in Australia, the other seems to be up in the air. The Others is a psychological thriller starring Nicole Kidman, which is supposed to be amazing if only for the visuals, and the way it somehow made it through Hollywood as a slow-building, tense thriller, without pointless effects. Out mid November, I think. Also worth checking out - The Man Who Wasn't There, by the Coen brothers. It's got pretty good reviews, considering the usual Coen brothers love/hate effect.

After a week of rumors and speculation that, as usual, were about as off the mark as Mundine's political commentary. And Apple released the iPod.
It's a nice little toy, basically a specced up portable MP3 player, and I don't need one, but hell I want one. I guess the real unfortunate thing for Apple is that now is just not the time for a product like this ? it's pretty much a top of the range player, so it's priced as such, and that makes it pretty unattractive in the current climate. Which is a shame, cos the iPod deserves to succeed.

I should start this by saying I want to use Outlook. From what I've seen of it in public beta, and from using it on PC's, it's great. Useful, pretty straightforward to use, and reasonably efficient. Not that bad, really. I want to use it.
I've got no idea exactly what's happened to Microsoft Outlook: mac since it's much hyped beta period started a while back. The beta came out, worked moderately well, had a few annoying bugs, and a lot of features marked as pending. It?ll be there in the final version ? it's only a beta, the website calmly said.
Jump forward to September. The beta's expired. There's still no word on the final version's availability or pricing. Strangely, the free beta download on the Microsoft site is still there, just without the word beta. And in my experience, most of the bugs I experienced (to use MS's latest marketing buzz) are still there in the "final" version. Worse still, the "final" version can only read Exchange mailboxes, not POP mail. So I have to run Outlook Express just to get external mail. (sigh). And that's only the start of my issues with Outlook: mac. I only hope they dropped the project to develop Outlook for MacOS X.

I'll finally get some of my photos online soon, some here and some more will be online once the new Cube7 website is finished, both in the actual site's design and in a gallery section, which will be great to get up and running. Way too many cool photos just sitting around on my computer. Watch this space for more news, soon.
And oh, will the new Cube7 site be funky.

Watched 8mm, the Nick Cage flick by Joel Schumacher (whose work doesn't really do much for me).. Really didn't grab me, started of quite strongly but really fell apart the longer it went. Which is interesting, given the movie was written by Kevin Andrew Walker (Se7en, Sleepy Hollow and the BMW Films series' Ambush and The Follow). It's all a bit too vengeful for me.
Anyway, much as I really didn't get into the movie, I grabbed a few scenes worth of Schumacher's commentary on the DVD. This, from the final scene, which was as close to 8mm got to uplifting: "It would've been nice, as in most movies, if we had the family having a picnic, the Celine Dion song came up, and the movie gave you some prozac with it. But what the hey, huh? I think you're too grown up for that"
And for that alone Joel Schumacher has my respect.

"Consumers aren't going to be thrown into a kettle of boiling water from the get-go, but rather enticed into an inviting, lukewarm bath, and then the temperature will be slowly raised over several release cycles." The first article in an interesting series of articles from CNet on the release of WindowsXP, looking at it from privacy, legal, consumer rights, a whole bunch of angles. The Microsoft/AOL showdown should be interesting to watch.

Mark the diaries.. October 23 looks like it'll bring an interesting announcement from Apple. All they're saying is that it's not a mac. There's rumours, but I'm not really trusting them at the moment - only time will tell.

The spam I'm getting to my thealph.com email address is getting more and more entertaining, and less and less likely to get any reaction other than automatic deleting. It used to be vaguely targeted, stuff like CD offers, computer gear, stuff I might actually want.
A quick scan of my deleted items folder shows: how to work from home, 4 offering a free guide explaining why hairloss happens (and presumably how to stop it, but you never can tell these days), several offering cheap mortgages, life insurance, and three copies of one offer for 204million email addresses (only $149! - can I get a discount since it's actually 203,999,999 addresses plus my email, which I already know?). And one from a kind stranger with the sage advice "Warning, economy slowing" which was actually a debt reduction spam with a fake beard and moustache.
Just got one with the intruiging title "Add REAL Inches To Your Package! GUARANTEED." They offer "proven, natural and safe" methods that can be used "in the privacy of your own home". Like there's other places for that kinda thing. Ahem.

Just listening to Something for Kate playing a cover of Jebediah's Harpoon. Really cool.
I think that's one thing the record company could capitalise on - there's so many great mp3s of acoustic sets, cover versions, live tracks.. I'd seriously consider putting up some subscription dollars for a napster-like service pushing good quality mp3s of b-sides, covers, and live. It's a great way to discover new music and artists, and since it's rarely published on CD, the record companies technically aren't really missing out on sales.. if anything, I'd probably track down and buy any good music I heard (which was how I used Napster when it was still kicking) Just a thought.

Big congratulations, best wishes and hugs to Matt and April on their engagement. Congratulations guys! May the future be bright, and the days happy.
Wait, that sounds like a corny ad for an old tv show. (cue the theme, Matt!)

One day when I've got some free time, I'm going to sit down and learn to play the acoustic guitar. Talked to April about it last night, and it's definitely on the list. Now I just need some time.

So it's election time here again. Luckily there isn't much time between when it was called and the actual election date, so we don't have to put up with crap political ads (writtenandauthorisedbysomeschmuckboringpartycanberra), but it's still so hard to escape. With only 5 channels (and that's including SBS) somehow both the ABC and 9 are showing the "great" debate live. Now the only thing appealing about the debate is watching the 'worm' jump around, and I'm not even sure they're doing that this year. So it's 7.30 on a Sunday night and there's nothing at all on tv. (sigh)
I know I should give a damn about it all, but it's so hard when they're all one big homogenous mush, afraid of alienating anyone other than terrorists.

Okay, so those of you who either know me well or work with me will know my slightly on the wrong side of normal obsession with Bang & Olufsen... It's a hard to explain thing. I don't claim to be an audiophile, so I can't really make any qualified comments on how they sound (other than fricken amazing) but I do feel remotely qualified to say that their design work is outstanding.
It's a constant source of inspiration, from the quality of the finish to the sheer simplicity that drives their interfaces. I'm amazed at how the design can both complement and challenge the engineering required to produce the sound, which is after all the purpose of the product. One day hopefully I'll make a pilgrimage to 'The Farm' in Denmark and meet some of the team.
In the meantime, I've got my little dream system, which is way over the top, but hey, I don't care. And while I'm saving, I've got my little taste of B&O (thanks to everyone at work:)

Amazon, the under-rated posterchild of the dotcom era, just keeps getting better.. they've clearly got some designers in there now (harrah!), and they're slowly making the online buying experience much closer to the physical shopping experience. Now, there's the chance to look inside a book, like this here one on IDEO. Brilliant idea. And they've taken the opportunity to make quite a few changes to the layout of the product pages. Amazon, love your work.

So, I've finally put together a blog (happy now, Kristie?). No idea what to say, ain't that always the way ? camera shy.
Okay, this is all I can think of - try and look interested... Now while I'm always a fan of sundried tomatoes, the specimens in my lunch today were a little too sundried, the end result being a bit more like tomato-jerky (which I've never had, but hey, artistic license, okay?)

For some reason, I woke up at 5.30am this morning. My brain has decided not to share with me the exact reason why then was as good a time as any to get up. So, I just wandered around the house for a few minutes then tried to get back to sleep.
Which I did. About 15 minutes before my alarm went off.
