hollywood grows up

Watched 8mm, the Nick Cage flick by Joel Schumacher (whose work doesn't really do much for me).. Really didn't grab me, started of quite strongly but really fell apart the longer it went. Which is interesting, given the movie was written by Kevin Andrew Walker (Se7en, Sleepy Hollow and the BMW Films series' Ambush and The Follow). It's all a bit too vengeful for me.

Anyway, much as I really didn't get into the movie, I grabbed a few scenes worth of Schumacher's commentary on the DVD. This, from the final scene, which was as close to 8mm got to uplifting: "It would've been nice, as in most movies, if we had the family having a picnic, the Celine Dion song came up, and the movie gave you some prozac with it. But what the hey, huh? I think you're too grown up for that"

And for that alone Joel Schumacher has my respect.
