on a jet plane...

I'm now going on holiday in about 48hours. Damn. That went fast.

The good news is that I'm slowly getting organised. I've got accommodation pretty much sorted, which is a bit of a relief. I'm probably going to spend a few days in a hotel at the start, just generally relaxing (whatever that is) and de-stressing after a pretty rollercoaster 18 months. Whew.

After that I'll be staying with some great people and seeing more of the sights of the big smoke. They tell me they live right near a 24-hour supermarket. 24 hours! Imagine! All my midnight cravings will be satisfied. Just a thought: why are Perth's trading laws so damn antique? Did we pick them up at an op shop after Melbourne ditched them in favour of 24/7 shopping goodness? Anyway.

I'm also hoping to catch up with a few people to check out all the spidey excitement, and I'll hoping to catch up with Bron and Pea for a coffee (or hot chocolate). Mmm. If anybody else wants to catch up, let me know   :]

Oh, and I'm hoping to blog my trip. I usually collect all sorts of stuff when I'm travelling, and end up throwing it all in a diary and never finish it (Matt and April can back me up on this). So I figure if I can just tap away while I'm going, it's all a lot more likely. I'll be doing most of it on my laptop, so even if this site's not updated every day, the next time I'm near a net connection I'll get all the news up here. Keep an eye out.

Si, just thought I'd bring your attention to two of perths 24 hour shops/supermarkets, they being Fresh Provisions in Mt Lawley roughly accross the road from Planet Video and the second being the ever-loverable Hungry Spot which is just a bit further down walcott street

and while I'm on a roll theres one in Innaloo aswell on scarborough beach road so theres three I'm shure there are more

oh theres one in subi aswell, we call it the inconvenience store but it's on hay street opposite ace cinemas subiaco

True, but most of the ones I've seen in Perth are more jumbo-sized deli's. Now I haven't seen the fabled 24hr supermarket but I'm lead to believe it's a real life-size supie. Watch for on-location updates on that one. But aside from that, I'm told of a (gasp!) 24hour Kmart somewhere in Sydney, otherwise known as the end of the rainbow. We should make a pilgrimage.

Mt Lawley and Innaloo. South of the River people really miss out on the jumbo-size super-deli thing huh. I lived in Scarborough for 2 years (1999 - 2001) and I never saw a 24 supermarket. I really could have used one back then too.
24 hours stores like 711 and Ezy-Plus don't cut the mustard. I wanna go to buy an egg beater at 3am from K-Mart. Now THAT is living.

While reading about the lack of 24 hour markets in Perth, I was reminded of a quote I heard once:

Something along the lines of "..ah well you're from Perth so you're different."

Actually I should also point out there's a 24 hour Subway in East Perth, which also has a decent sized deli attached. They're my new best friends for late night walks around Noddy's Toyland (aka East Perth).

And to clarify: I'm talking supermarket in terms of every-brand-of-detergent-known-to-man Coles, not local deli's on roids.

ok ok so most of them are super-delis, fine, but for super-delis they're pretty good, as for a 24 hour K-mart well that just begging for us to launch a full 3am assault on it, hehe

Let us not forget prices. Are the prices in 24 places over east notched up significantly? Over here in Perth they charge an extra arm and possibly a leg for the privilege of shopping at 3:14am.

Side note: in Wales (not of the "new south" variety) they have the world's largest Tesco's that is open 24 hours. Now that's shopping.

Okay..in Perth we have 24 hour deli's..we have hungry spot and ezy plus and fresh provisions...but if you are that desparate to get your groceries that late at night...well you have no life...the above places are fun...not too big...not to small...so you can go in there at 4am and it's a treat after a big night out....and you don't feel compelled to buy the toilet paper you're lacking or the detergent you are missing....
