Did anyone else experience the mystical healing powers of flat lemonade as a child? I remember when I was young and feeling under the weather, the thing to do was drink de-fizzed lemonade.
Now in a world of big plastic bottles, we were a can-happy family, so flat lemonade was pretty hard to come by. So I've now got vivid memories of a childhood spent pouring perfectly good fresh-from-the-can lemonade from one glass to another to get rid of the bubbles.
As you do.
Was that gem something my parents made up, or is that a common way to get some sugar into a sick kid? And don't get me started on Lucozade, either. That used to be the standard post-doctor pharmacy booty for me, along with little single-serve packets of jelly beans. Mmmm.

My folks had the same theory, if you were sick then flat lemonade it was (normally schweppes from memory).
However, we had a flat lemonade shortage as well, simply because we just never had any in the house ("if they get thirsty they'll drink water", my mother always used to say). So we'd pop down to the shops to invest in a bottle.
However there was no glass to glass pouring action for me -I got to watch the cure to all my ails sit quietly in a glass as it de-fizzed itself.

There's actually a scientific reason behind drinking stuff like flat lemonade. My doc explained it to me. See, the thing is, everyone goes on and on and on about how drinking water is the best thing in the world. But your body actually absorbs water better when it has a small amount of sugar in it. Your body doesn't hold as much water in if it's just plain ole clear liquid gold. Hence, flat lemonade is good for rehydration, and rejuvenation, because it is sugary water.

Tip o the hat to Dr JenJen. If you bulk bill as well you're my new favourite doctor!
