rockin

Okay, so there's weren't any obvious people of the v.i. variety at the opening, at least not as far as we saw. But we did get a swanky yellow wristband to show our very-importantness.

But all that this meant squat once the movie started, because we were at the very back, behind a rope, and everybody courteously sitting on chairs at the back of the main section were actually right in front us. Which just goes to show that being John Citizen is better than being John Citizen, VIP.

Lesson learned, but I'll ignore it this Sunday when we host our own sponsor night in the little roped off bit. But we'll come prepared with beanbags and cushions.

In other news, Calle 54, the jazz doco they screened last night was amazing. I haven't seen Buena Vista Social Club, but I'm definately going to make the effort now. Calle was great if only because they filmed the bands live at Sony Music Studios, so the sound really is studio quality. Mucho recommended.

Wicked Beat Sound System, nyeh, I dunno. I haven't actually heard their entire new album, but from what I heard last night, I think I prefer their earlier stuff. No, really. But they did sound pretty impressive live. Kudos for that.

welcome to thursday

I was going to say it's a crap day, but I'm slowly changing my mind.

It probably started with my flaunting the laws of chance and actually winning a free Coke at lunch. That's 1 from 6! Woo! I'll probably pick it up tomorrow. Coke is sweet, but free Coke is sweeter. Or so I hope.

We've also got VIP tickets to the Sunset Cinema opening tonight, where we get to schmoozle with other people who are not just important, but very important. Indeedy! I'm not actually sure who in Perth qualifies as v.i. so I'll report back tomorrow. If I see Rose I'll restrain myself, promise.

defying statistics

Now in case you've been comatose under a rock, or watching Dr Phil, I've been taking on the law of averages and am slowly drinking my way up to 12 bottles of Coke to prove wrong their 1 in 12 wins slogan. So far it's 5 Cokes, and zip prizes. Time will tell.

To help keep track of this statistical anomaly, I've added a little box to the sidebar. Check back to follow the battle of good vs evil, and the righteousness of Coke vs the loserness of Simon.

irrigation vs irritation

It's been a while since I mentioned the joys of Amazon's Gold Box, so here goes.

First up in today's Gold Box? The Panasonic Portable Oral Irrigator, which I guess is Amazon's way of telling me my breath stinks.

But wait! Next up is the Braun Oral-B Oxy Jet Oral Irrigator, because subtlety doesn't always work in these situations. And because it's a rare person who puts anything with 'oxy jet' in it's name into their mouth.

hi, how're you going?

I've spent a bit of time on the phone today dealing with our suppliers at work, and it looks like today is a universally crap day. Everybody's a bit stressed, a bit rushed, and pretty honest in answering my "how're you going?" on the phone.

How's your Tuesday been?

i still blame mars

And now for an update on my half-hearted quest to win a free 600ml Coke in the current promo. Today's lunch was washed down with another 600ml of Try Again.

Now I've never won a free Coke in any of their promos, and I'm really pushing my already pathetic luck in the current run. The label cheerfully promises a 1 in 12 chance of scoring a free drink. I'm now officially 4 down, 8 to go.

Wish me luck!

unwritten

I have this rule about music. 99% of the time, if a song's lyrics include the name of the artist/band/record-company-puppet performing, it's gonna be crap. And so far it's held up well. Granted I've ruled out the majority of rap and hip hop, but to be fair, I can live with that. I'm not a huge fan of either, so in essence my 'crap' theory holds.

But there are exceptions. Right now it's Ms Dynamite's Dy-Na-Mi-Tee. That's the only track I've heard off the cd, but I kinda like it.

Then again, Amazon's product page says that people who bought her album, Lil Deeper, also bought Justin Timberlake, J-Lo and Eminem's new cds, so who knows...

simon is a loser

Despite my disturbing addiction to drinks of the Coca-Cola variety, I have yet to actually win anything from a Coke bottle. And this study in statistics had a pretty huge sample space. But since this is the modern world, and Coke is an American company, I feel it's only fair to blame someone else.

My theory is that it all stems back to the Mars free bars promo from a couple of years back — you know, the one with the guy on the train station platform. After ripping open the mars bar, in what would probably be a heady chocolate-fuelled giddy spell, he throws away the wrapper with 'Free Bar' written in big, festive, chocolate-smudged letters on the inside. Then some other schmuck picks it out of the bin (hello?) and scores the free bar.

The name of the nice guy who thoughtfully disposed of the litter in a bin?

Simon.

saturdays

The past six months or so have been, well, bizarre if only for the regular once-a-week episodes of "Things I never thought I'd be doing on a Saturday."

It usually involved filming stunts for the Oh My show — taking photos of a kid running around with a giant pair of scissors; icing a giant cake just so Matt could fall into it at the top of an escalator; and the possible high-point of watching Matt roll around the CBD in a bathtub full of bubblebath and water.

This fine tradition was continued yesterday, as Matt, April and myself went to an english-themed going away party dressed as a teabag (April) and two giant sugar cubes. It doesn't get much more surreal. The only thing we forgot was to put a cupholder inside the sugarcubes so we had somewhere to sit our drinks (I mean everything has a cupholder these days, right?).

lunch at the shops

it's all about the skirt

I'm not sure if it's common knowledge, but I heard a long time ago that when viewed from above, Perth's QV1 office tower is supposedly modelled on Marilyn Monroe's lips. I can't find any photos on the web to support this, but take my word for it.

Driving through the city last week with one of the guys from work, I found out another weird one. Andy tells me that the St George's Tce entrance is influenced by that scene with the dress.

And once the thought's in your head, it's disturbing. Up close it's not too noticable, but from a distance it's creepy.

Update: Check the comments for the saucy lips illustration...

excuse

Has anyone else noticed that I've subconciously made up for not finishing my photo site by putting a photo with every second post?

Just checking.

when hayfever attacks

I spent most of Saturday lounging under various trees up in Kings Park, enjoying a beautiful summer-spring day from the shade. The view across the CBD was pretty good, apart from the haze from some controlled fires.

I had to take a break for a few hours in the afternoon when I retreated sneezing and squinting indoors after a pretty spectacular hayfever hit. But I was back, dosed up on meds, and ready to enjoy a sunset picnic by the memorial with Matt and April. And about 60 flies, bringing on a strange waving-and-swatting dance that must've looked like high-speed tai chi to anyone else.

That's the one part of Summer in Perth I always forget about over Winter.

glad that's over

It is now 6.44 on Friday night. From a weekday point of view, the crappest week in recent history is now over. Roll on a big, fat, do-nothing weekend.

not the corporate type

A small gang of us from work went along to a sponsors do for Sunset tonight organised by the catering company to show us how wonderful their services are (and yes, they are good).

Unfortunately for the first 20minutes or so the turnout was pretty small. Every minute someone in white would walk up quietly behind you and offer to top up your drink. Every minute.

I'm not kidding.

The nibblies were excellent, even if the waiters kept avoiding us. I think they were able to detect the lack of likely contracts in our general vicinity. We didn't even get offered a season program booklet (featuring our full page ad! woo!).

However our finest "we don't do this often" moment came when (after feeding finger food to a duck) we bailed on the corporate event and wandered around the very cool playground next door.

It's okay. We're creatives.

corbijn

I finally picked up my copy of U2's new Best of 1990-2000 CD today, complete with bonus b-sides and bonus-bonus dvd (can't help but notice these 'bonuses' bump up the price to $39). But it's all worth it just for a booklet full of Anton Corbijn's beautiful photos.

Check out the photography section of his site.. Corbijn manages to take the most creative photos of celebrities, which has got to be a tough brief. Muchos respect.

any excuse to stop the nation

melbcupsweeps.jpg
So today was the Melbourne Cup. Woo.

In our office it's just an excuse for a party. So come lunch we were pretty much gathered around the barbecue out in the backyard, drinking disturbingly cheap "champagne/sparkling white wine" and chowing down on prawns and sausages. And Vanilla Coke. Mmmm.

We had a half-hearted office sweeps, except nobody had any change. The eventual prize pool consisted of $8.35, a rubber band, a 45c postage stamp, a picture frame and a mars bar. Feel the excitement, people.

magic!

I downloaded the funky magic eightball for OS X this afternoon, and have been having a little too much fun since. Sample conversation:

Me: Is the naked chef actually naked?
Eightball: Outlook not good

Now I don't know about you, but I'm going to take that as a yes.

Me: Is the annoying ask-questions-woman naked?

Eightball: Definitely

Matt: Well that explains the camera work

so where do i push?

One of the joys of editing Oh My has been messing with DV cameras, and the miracle of digital video and firewire. It's so amazingly simple. And yet they manage to complicate things. Take, for example, ejecting a tape from a DV cam. It really shouldn't be this hard. It's like the climax of The Peacemaker, where George and Nicole have to defuse some nuclear bomb. There's the most intricate operation involved in opening the thing up.

Witness the mind-numbing complexity of a DV tape slot. The thing's littered with big DO NOT PUSH HERE stickers, and the one spot on the camera you are legally obliged to push is hidden under the strap for the handle. Genius.

extreme editing

The past couple of weeks have been pretty much consumed between work and wrapping up eveyrthing for the Oh My videos. All the episodes are now edited, and over the weekend we recorded commentaries with a bunch of the people involved. We're hoping to be able to get a DVD together, but it depends on timing and costs. At the least, we should have a video of all the episodes by early December.

Incidentally, that's Dave during the editing of the extreme ironing segment on Friday night as part of our 10-till-6 editing marathon. Whew.
