quack

I was looking for a photo of a duck on a white background so I could make a nice outline duck-shape (long story, again) so I punched 'duck and object' into Getty Images. It then asks me exactly what I meant:

Which 'duck AND object' do you mean?
  "Ducking (Moving Activity)"
  "Duck (White Meat)"
  "Duck (Fresh Water Bird)"

Gah! Duck (White Meat). I don't think I've been so freaked out by stock photos since I discovered Photodisc included shoplifting and (cough) "massage" in their Business and Occupations cd.

new vanilla lancer

I used to have a small bottle of vanilla essence in my car (it's a long story, involving both Coke and choc-chip cookies. Let's move on). That's past tense because yesterday, while parked in the baking heat outside meetings in either Cottesloe or East Perth, the little vanilla bottle that could, well, suddenly couldn't.

cousin (cousin!) yeah-yeah-yeah

I caught the start of the twisted world of Spinal Tap meets the Backstreet Boys last night, with Get Ready to be Boyzvoiced in the Cult movie slot on SBS. The first thirty minutes were pretty damn good, and I've got the rest on tape to guffaw through tonight.

I've got a shoestring fisheye photo from the bridge, but we'll save that for tomorrow.

mt henry bridge (1 of 3)

I felt like walking on Saturday night. Some days you feel like you spend all your time running in circles and sitting in a chair. Wandering around during a warm summer sunset's a welcome change of pace.

labcoats and all

Today Tonight, one of the dodgy 'current affairs' shows following the news, ran with a story last night with the introduction: "Bikini Bras: Perth scientists test for comfort (pause) and support."

i'm still alive

Sorry I've gone a little quiet lately. I had a client presentation on Thursday that kept me tied up all week (it went well!). I'll be back in a day or two.

think summer thoughts

I see this baby's worth about $1.69 at current exchange rates.

it's all my fault

Fellow Perthites, I'm really sorry. I said the hot weather sucked, and wham suddenly it's all mid-20's and cloudy for the next week.

So, yeah. Sorry about that whole no-more-summer thing. My bad. But I'll make it up by moaning about how crap winter is, around late June, okay?

some time ago

This shot was taken some time ago, when it was much much cooler. The weekend peaked out at over 40, and our place has neither air-con or even air-flow. Bring on June, I say.

movin' on up

Two movies in two days. Woo.

Wednesday Matt, Steve and I caught Michael Moore's excellent Bowling for Columbine at Luna. Amazing doco, brilliantly funny and moving in the same beat. It's won a heap of awards, all well deserved. Don't miss it. (Update: there's a pretty good interview with Moore in ABC Online's arts site)

Thursday a gang of us went along to check out The Ring at Sunset (because there's no better place to watch a scary movie than with a few hundred strangers in the middle of a big, wooded, deserted park). Pretty damn good, but I want to see the original Japanese version now. Beautifully directed by Gore Verbinski and shot by Bojan Bazelli.

And because I think we can all appreciate a movie featuring a lead cast member who has also starred in Australia's own fine productions of Echo Point of Home and Away. As a matter of fact, both the lead roles feature ex Home and Away talent. Bet you never saw that coming.

who says romance is dead?

Amazon now appeal to the geek sweetheart market, or so it seems.

a moment's silence

A man couldn't ask for a finer cactus/weed/asparagus.

It will be missed.

does this make my site tax deductable?

A quick question for all you crazy dvd-watching people out there: what's important to you in buying/renting a disc? Picture/sound quality? Features? Commentaries? Deleted scenes? Animated menus and theatrical trailers? (gasp!). Post a comment and let me know what you're thinking.

Look kids — I'm using my site to conduct market research!

happiness is a free sunset double pass

Hear ye, hear ye. You can now win free Sunset Cinema doubles at the Cube without the need for a digicam and bad drawing skills. All it takes is seven words.

It doesn't get much easier, people.

asparagus update

Bad news on the cactus front, I'm afraid. While it may have survived its encounter with the geeky might of the Cube boys, it's now admitted defeat.

It's big, fleshy, spiky, ouchy leaves are now pink and flopping lifelessly towards the ground, and birds are noisily munching on the flowers. Which is the point, I guess, spreading the seeds further afield and all that. It just seems like a shame.

now with added colour

Because sometimes colour is cool too.

mono

I think my photos are a pretty good gauge of how I'm feeling at any one time. Lately I've been taking a lot of black and white. What exactly does that mean?

Posted on Monday, February 3, 2003 | Life | 2 Comments

things i learned while renting

  • Gardens suck. Front lawns are worse still.
  • The people in unit 3 suck. More than front lawns. (and I didn't think that was possible)
  • If a former housemate breaks a towel rack, best not to ask. It's safe to assume non-towel-related activities were involved. Possibly baby-making activities.
  • Air-conditioning is a plus, but right now I'd settle for air-flow.
  • A former housemate's former toothbrush is a good way to clean grout between tiles, and also an ideal stress-reliever.
