Matt has pointed out that there's a program on the ABC all about call centres in India and their culture-capsules (Thursday, 10pm). It's all weirdly deja-vu.

Wow...I was thinking about this last night but I didn't know that it actually existed. I'm having computer issues right now, and when I e-mailed Compaq support, the guy who e-mailed me back had an Indian name. I probably wouldn't have noticed, but I really don't know if I'd be able to pronounce it correctly, that's the only reason I noticed it. I've had to e-mail them twice before (I've had the computer a couple of years), and every time, it was a different (but very Indian) name writing back to me. I wondered if it was a wierd coincidence, but I guess that I'm e-mailing India.
(If my situation is any indication, the Indian help centers are working - every time I've e-mailed, they've been quite helpful and responded within 20 minutes.)

Yeah I've ended up talking to a few Indian people when calling customer service lines - the most recent when ordering a dispenser for plastic bags...as one does...
Quite funny though that our IT-support at work as been outsourced to a group in New Zealand of all places - I know their currency is worse than ours but I didn't realise it was that bad!

I watched the show and my overall feeling was sadness for the Indian people that work in the call centres. They have to neutralise their accents and try to become Becky from Arkansas. Its sad. Not to mention pretty wrong that all these jobs are being outsourced when there are Aussie workers who would benefit from being employed.
