Kristie's currently quoting a building company to redesign their site, so she's merrily clicking through the pages to get an idea of what they're about. The fun part is they've got some awful MIDI music playing the background, piano lounge music. It's like we're in some weird lounge bar at 8.30 in the morning.
update: One of the guys in the next room at work is once again torturing us with his all-repeat workday... today's lowlight is Mariah Carey's cover of Against All Odds. Is there a greater crime against the listening public's ears than Mariah Carey covering Phil Collins?

I'm recovering from a couple of crazy weeks so I'll be lying low for a few more days till I get some energy back (the long weekend this week should help). In the mean time, I've finished reading High Fidelity (excellent) and am now onto The Tipping Point (I forgot how much I enjoy reading this kinda stuff).

Ahhh, yes. The Matrix Reloaded. I see April still hasn't written about it, so I'll attempt to fill the void.
First, some back-story. The original Matrix was good. Not amazing, but good (I was always bitter that it got so much hype, and Dark City was completely overlooked). It bugged me on a few levels, but overall it's a pretty solid mix of plot and action. And to be honest, I've seen it maybe twice all the way through. Yep, I was that ambivalent.
And then the thundering juggernaut that is Reloaded came along. I don't think I'm quite ready to talk about it yet (read Rolling Stone's review for something close).
One thing that did sour the experience was the insult that was passed off as a conclusion. After 138 minutes I'd expect more than a "click! go see the sequel!" I should go to see the next film in the series because I want to, not because I need to in order to resolve pretty much every plot point from this movie.
But then maybe that's just me.

Bad news. It started with insulting our MD, but my copy of Word now seems to thinks I'm a geek. And when your office suite says that, well, you've hit rock bottom.
Granted I was actually writing a financially geeky letter, but then that's part of my job, so there's no helping that.

There's always a price difference between Coke and Pepsi. It's the way of the world, and I almost always buy Coke and fork out the extra few cents. it's my small donation to teach the world to sing, apparently.
The deli down the road from work has Coke for $2.40 (which is a rant in itself) and Pepsi for $1.65. Now as much as I like the red bottle and despise those tv ads with David Beckham's sissy 'pepsi!' tagline, I can't justify an extra 75cents. So today I bought a Pepsi Max, which seems to be the closest Pepsi can get to Coke without a very unsexy courtroom fight.
Urk. What's going on? I feel like I'm supporting some kind of evil dictator.

Fellow Cube-boy Andy, who's addicted to eBay in a horrible-but-still-fashionable way, is finally selling something on there. I snapped a few photos for him, and few for me. Mine are all close-ups of labels and textures (which is me being, well, me I guess). But imagine! You could own this funky jacket!

So, you're messing with adjustment layers in Photoshop. Today's handy tip is simple but incredibly useful: when Photoshop creates a new adjustment layer for you, it automatically adds a layer mask.
So for example, you can add a colour balance adjustment layer to add more pink and yellow to clouds at sunset, and use a gradient to gradually apply the adjustment as you move up the image.

I'm a little quiet, I know, but I've been tapping away on the laptop the last few nights working on a new layout for diversionary. But it's more than just a new layout.. it's got some nifty code from Kohan under the hood so that I can mess with CSS-layouts to my heart's desire.
It's hard to explain... stay tuned.

I'll cut a long story short and just state a fact here: I'm a big fan of movies from Pixar. So far, they've proven Hollywood wrong and had major hits with every feature film release (and their short films are equally amazing).
So why, why, why, why why are we getting their latest, Finding Nemo (US release May 30) in August? Granted, Australia's not doing too badly. The New Zealand release date is September and the UK waits till October. And pity the poor folks in Iceland, who have to wait until Boxing Day to find out where the hell Nemo is (answer: not in Iceland).

I was in a seminar covering website accessibility and (in passing) usability, and it struck me how many people in the industry don't get it. It took me a while for the switch to really flick, but in the end it's simple: build well, code well, and accessibility's not a problem.
I've been messing with making my sites more accessible using CSS and other tools, but now it's a more serious focus for my time. I'll post anything interesting I come up with over the next few months.

I think I woke up on the angry side of the bed this morning. I'm mellowing as the day goes on, but consider yourself warned.
In other news, this was yesterday's lunch: a cajun chicken and sundried tomato sandwich. Lesson learnt: sundrieds don't photograph well in direct sunlight.

A while ago I hacked together a few javascripts that let me do searches on some useful sites straight from the bookmarks menu or favourites bar. If you want to add them to yours, just right-click and add them to your favourites..
Search Amazon Books, Amazon Music, Amazon DVDs, Rotten Tomatoes (movie reviews), Movie Titles (IMDB), Movie People (IMDB)

A handy Photoshop tip if you're working with a bunch of photos with similar problems, for example lights have shifted the colour balance of the photo.
I always use Adjustment Layers to mess with levels and colour balance. Why? The changes aren't permanent -- if I decide I went a bit heavy on the levels I can change the settings. But some photos take more than one adjustment layer.
Easy fix? Group them in a layer set, making it a no-brainer to apply the same adjustments to multiple images. Just drag the set from one image to the next.
You could use an action to automate the same thing, but the advantage of adjustment layers is, say one of the photos is slightly less affected than the others, you can just knock down the opacity of the relevant adjustment layer on that image.
