craving a lomo

I've got a dilemma. I want a Lomo. Sounds simple, doesn't it?

But something in me feels like a sucker paying $150 US for what is essentially a cheap toy camera. I know they're funky, I know the plastic lens does amazing things, I love the colours and vignetting. And I love the approach to photography encouraged by the lomo. What's starting to annoy me is the organisation behind it.

I did a bit of digging on Google yesterday and the whole Society seems like a way to inflate the asking price, since they control the worldwide export market for Lomos from Russia.

Supposedly there are people in Russia who'll go down to an upmarket camera store in St Petersberg and post a brand new lomo to you for $90 US (and they'd still make a profit). Maybe I'll get one sent all covert-like from Russia.

Maybe I'll just write a bunch of Photoshop actions to mimic the effect instead.

It's like filming on super8. Sure it can be replicated with some clever filters, but it's still not the same.

ps: its also a cheap toy camera with a plastic lens, great light leaks, vignetting and beautiful colours. its from china, though, so maybe not so romantic as russia.

here are the australian lomo and holga extortionists: http://www.lomography.com.au/
