Flicker Zzzzzt *Pop*

The power transformer at the end of our street died last night (with a loud pop) so the street was in darkness from about 8. After using my mobile phone's backlight to track down a real torch, I dug around the house looking for some candles.

Of course the greatest upside of a blackout is the perfectly good excuse to light heaps of candles... I think I'm discovering my pyro tendencies later in life (I'm willing to accept some responsibility for littering Matt & April's backyard with at least a hundred tealights and a fair few bamboo flares for a 21st party).

It's also a great excuse to bring out the snowballs.

Surely there must be some sort of inherent risk in putting a camera that close to a naked flame.

Next you'll be telling me that there's a risk in taking a camera out in the rain, right?

Yeah, it was reasonably close, but it survived. And high school physics tells me that yellow flames aren't really that hot.

Ah yes, the good ol' misnomer that is the safety flame

The ol' seeing by the phone backlight trick, eh? I use that every night to find my way around the house w'out waking up the spouse!

I can't remember which manufacturer it was, but I noticed the other day that one phone company has finally gone "oh, the hell with it, we'll just include an actual torch in the phone".

Good on'em, I say.

PS but what's truly scary is that at the last concert I saw there were more backlit mobile phones being waved in the air than cigarette lighters...
