Sittin' on top of the world

I'm back. I didn't go too silly with photos on holiday this time, when I get some time I'll gather the rest of the pics together than post some highlights.

Tomorrow morning I'm right back into the workday routine after a week or so away, so we'll see how that goes. Wish me luck!

This could be anywhere

It's a photo of a tree by the road over in Carlton, taken while waiting for a tram. Granted it could be just about anywhere, so you'll have to trust me on this one.

An update

I'll meander the laneways of the city more today/tomorrow I think, but here's two photos from earlier this week. I walked past Hell's Kitchen, which I'll have to drop into, what with it attracting "a loyal mix of architects and designers" I feel strangely obliged. And anyway, Boudist went there so it's gotta be cool, right?

Last night Mot and I made it in to the studio audience for The Panel, which was good fun. I'd post a photo, but they were pretty anti-photo while in the studio so you'll have to use your imagination. Sadly no musical guest, but Harry Shearer was on so that more than makes up for it.

Hot Chocolate: Part 1

Today I finally made it down to L'Aperitivo, just down the road from where I'm staying in Brighton, for the first serious entry in mission: hot chocolate.

And oh man, I had no idea what I was in for. It's insanely good. Imagine a cup filled with molten milk chocolate, and then a slightly crusty top and you're close.

The Age's review said "closer to a dessert than a hot drink" which is erring on the side of caution, unless you can think of any other drinks that can only be consumed with a spoon.

The question is, does anyone in Perth make real Italian hot chocolate? If so, let's book in a hot chocolate trip when I'm back in town.

Update: Still no sign of Italian Hot Choc in Perth, but I did find and try out a recipe (June 16, 2005)

When in St Kilda...

I've spent a couple of days lounging around at St Kilda Beach and enjoying the warm and sunny weather (21°C! -- My previous comments about Melbourne weather stand, incidentally).

Yesterday afternoon was mostly spent stretched out on the grass by the beach listening to tunes on my iPod. This is something I could really get used to.

I heart Fed Square

I made it into Federation Square yesterday afternoon, and spent a while wandering around ACMI's Screen Gallery, which is amazing. I'm going to check out the NGV another day, and I see there's a design thing on at the Museum (why do I always miss the really good exhibitions?)

Anyway, Fed Square. Swoon.

A Kinda Hypothetical

So while K and her Hypotheticals are taking a break from tooaskew, I figure now's as good a time as any to ask a question of my own.

Where would you rather be?

De-stressing

So I'm relaxing in Melbourne now. I may post while I'm here, on the other hand I may not.

Have a great weekend!

On subject

Question: Am I the only person who gets emails with no subject line and then tacks on a subject when replying?

Just asking.

Stop for a drink

The down-side of holidays? Working too hard before I leave to make sure everything's done.

Hot chocolate

While pondering some great suggestions for things to do in Melbourne, I was hunting down some more info on Natalie's suggestion of Koko Black (otherwise known as chocoholic heaven).

Just quietly, I want to live in a city which warrants a detailed review of the hot chocolate on offer across town (drool).

Steps

Great news -- I'm taking a holiday!

Bad news -- it's next week! (gah! so much to do before then)

The really sad part is that it's the first real holiday I've taken since my June 2002 trip, coincidentally also to Melbourne. Why Melbourne? Because Melbourne's cool, and because I want to move there and it's fun to torture myself.

I'm going to throw open the 'things to do in Melbourne' list again (but let's not start 24-hour shopping debates again) -- I'll be there for at least one weekend, so tell me what's cool.

Two observations

  1. I can now report that Missy Higgins' Scar EP is indeed the best. I do miss the more jazzy sound of her self-titled release, but The Cactus that Found the Beat more than makes up for it.
  2. It's hard not to be happy when The Cat Empire's Hello comes up in iTunes.
