Somersault

I managed to catch a preview of Cate Shortland's debut feature Somersault at the Luna the other night, and it's definitely worth checking out if you get a chance.

Everyone's raving (and with good reason) about Abbie Cornish's performance as Heidi, and Sam Worthington is great as Joe (Trivia Thursday! K was Sam Worthington's peer support at high school). But you can read about serious things like performances and direction from more credible sources than me, so I'll move on.

But not before I mention All Saints (or "All Sain7s" as Channel 7 tried to convince us it was spelt).

Now I've never actually watched the show, but I've seen enough promos to forever associate Erik Thomson with Aussie-medical-drama. He's good in this, so hopefully the association ends here.

Somersault is worth watching for the beautiful cinematography and the scenery -- this is an Australian film that's not filmed in the desert or suburbia. Shot around Jindabyne and Canberra, it looks completely different to anything I've seen lately. There's also a great soundtrack by Decoder Ring, which is now on my shortlist of CDs to buy this weekend.

Now excuse me while I get all designery.

The opening titles were great, almost perfect. Lots of handwriting drawing in, and some great animation on the main title. But why almost perfect? Talk to my good friend Mr Kerning.

How do you spell pedantic?

Normally not a big deal, but they used a handwriting font and almost-but-not-quite matched up the strokes between letters. Petty, I know, but I'm a designer so what did you expect?

Where were we?

Somersault. Great film. Check it out.
