Obie

The Ocean Beach Hotel down in Cott has weird mobile phone 'ears' that don't sit too well with the Art Deco-esque architecture.

Run down

Continuing the fence theme, here's a shot from a meander this afternoon down in Cottesloe... I had a meeting in Fremantle that wrapped up at 4.45, well after my supposed 4pm home-time, so I figured I'd drive home along the coast for a change.

I'd post a photo from the beach itself, but that always makes Natalie homesick, which feels kinda mean.

That, and I didn't actually take any on the beach this time.

Highlight of today? Sitting in a boardroom by the port watching a small whale and her calf swim past.

My head hurts

From a client email this morning (the added emphasis is mine)...

The extranet website is now available from the internet. The URL to access the extranet from the internet is intranet.(whatever).com

Pain-tranet.

Lazy

I felt like taking photos on Sunday, but it was hot and I couldn't be bothered actually going somewhere just to take photos. So here's a photo of the grapevine next to the pool at home.

Speaking of the weekend: the reason that whole thou shalt not use flashes at gigs thing came up was Friday night. While watching Missy Higgins at the Fly By Night down in Freo, I stood a few metres from the stage watching people in front of me stick their camera out above the crowd, focus, and then FWOOMP! take a photo and duck back into the masses again. The photos, which you could see on the screen before they yanked the camera down again, were universally overexposed and flat.

Missy was amazing though!

If she ever releases a cover of Eye of the Tiger I'm there with bells on.

Bugged

Sure it could be focused a little better, but it's a bug... they run away when you try to take photos.

Much like people actually.

Flashing

Memo to fellow gig-goers: if you're taking photos at gigs, don't use a flash. It kills the ambience and your photos will look crap. If you don't know how to turn the flash off, you probably shouldn't be taking photos at gigs in the first place.

Whew.

Sorry, I had to get that out.

By the way, that's Fourth Floor Collapse launching their Godspeed EP at Mojo's a few weeks back... they've just finished a national tour but if you ever get a chance to check them out live, do it. They're amazing live.

I'd have better shots of them but I was enjoying the gig too much to actually take photos.

More disks

It's been years since I've used a disk. It's amazing how things change.

History on 3.5" disks

Clearing out a bunch of old junk today we uncovered a couple of boxes of old 3.5" disks... flicking through them brings back memories of geek days long gone. I don't think anyone really uses disks much any more (and I use Macs so there's not much choice in the matter) so most are destined for the bin but we'll salvage the useful ones to pass on to any homes we can find for them...

Prince of Persia.
Photoshop 3.
After Dark.
Carmen Sandiego (both world and time).
HyperCard (does anyone else remember HyperCard?)

And last but not least, a disk with the installer for Netscape 1.1 -- how's that for back in the day?

Psychoanalyse this

So, I needed some handwriting for work. It takes a while to get a nice sample to drop into the design so I scrawled over and over until there were a few to choose from.

It was only later I realised that it looked like some kind of twisted window to my soul...

New toy

Some observations on finally getting a new G5 to play with at work:

  1. The case is insane. The engineering and design involved in the case is bordering on obscene. I love Apple.
  2. It's freaking huge.
  3. It's also freaking heavy (as I noticed carting two of them around on the weekend)
  4. Damn it's fast. It struggles with the base 256mb of memory, but once you kick that up over gig it's happy sailing. You clickity-click and it keeps up.
  5. Power LED's do strange things when you move the camera during a long-ish exposure.

Update on the freaking-heaviness: the specs say it's 18kg. So much power it hurts to carry it.

Cherry Coke, we hardly knew thee

Last week I had my suspicions confirmed.

Dear Simon Wright Thanks for your mail.

Unfortunately we no longer produce Cherry Coke in Australia. I will advise our Marketing Dept that you would like it back. If you have any further questions please call 1800 025 123.

Regards,
The Coke Webmaster

Farewell, Cherry Coke.

PS. I found a 2L bottle at home the other day -- I'll be holding a wake and mournfully drinking the last of the summer wine unexpectedly cherry Coke at some point.

Wishful thinking

If I was living in Melbourne, today would be a public holiday.

In related news, there's a horse race on today. Any tips?

More Spring

Hey look -- I found another photo of a tulip from that trip to Araluen a while back.
