King Street

Another lomo-esque shot from just off King Street.

In other news, I'm kinda without-camera at the moment.

The little latch that keeps the door of my trusty Nikon Coolpix 990's battery compartment closed broke back in January (launching AA batteries out of the camera in quite comical fashion, as Matt and Ris can testify).

I've been using a variety of chunky elastic bands to hold it shut since but that's not working too well. There's only so many times I can deal with opening my Crumpler and finding my poor camera's batteries spewed all over the bottom of the bag and the battery latch flapping in the breeze. Not to mention constantly resetting the date and time (and stopping that infernal beep every time I take a photo).

So, the time has come. I'm thinking about getting a nice new Digital SLR.

I'm tempted to stick with Nikon and grab a D70s (ala Mot) though the Canon EOS350D (ala Dan) is equally tempting. Either way I'm going to need to invest in a nice macro lens so I can keep taking silly close-up shots.

Canon? Nikon? Any suggestions, dear reader?

Canon all the way baby.

I haven't got anything bad to say about Nikon, i've just been continually impressed by my Canon cameras. Why don't you go into a shop and have a go of each one. A nice thing about the Canon is it's about as small and light as you'll find in an SLR. The battery life is also very impressive.

I'm quite the Nikon fan, I find they feel better built and the lenses are fantastic. A friend has this lens and let me play with it for a bit and it was wonderful for nice close shots:

I've heard nothing but good things about the D70 though.
I think either brand will be a fine choice though.

I might be biased but I'd say stick with Nikon. You know how they work and you know what their quality is like (and the battery catch is probably still the first thing that would give out). The body certainly feels more solid than the 300D but I haven't picked up a new 350D.

As for macro stuff you could just pick yourself up a reverse adapter (see here: http://tinyurl.com/czm5v ) if you're happy doing everything manually.

We've got a Nikon D70, and I can't speak highly enough of it.

Watch out though, apparently they're releasing a new model soon that features a better battery, improved flash and a larger LCD screen.

I've had nikon SLR's for 20 years and am impressed with their digitals...

In the meantime however, have you tried old fashoned GAFFER tape? :)
