The Blues

I never managed to catch the seven-part documentary series Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues when it was released in cinemas a couple of years ago. Luckily ABC TV are playing them as part of their tv/radio/online Blues festival.

I'm looking forward to checking out the films by Scorsese and Eastwood in particular, but the whole line-up of directors all look like we should be in for some good films.

The only bad news is the time slot -- 10pm, Saturday night.

Thong

So. Anyway.

I've still got a backlog of shots from the great blog-posting drought that was last Summer, but something feels wrong about posting bright sunny beach photos in the middle of a dark, rainy winter.

That aside, here's a photo of a thong I stumbled across by the river.

Taking Off

Since it seems almost everyone I know is either on a holiday, about to leave on on a holiday, or planning a holiday, I decided it was time to start scheming about my next trip. Which, predictably enough, will probably be to Melbourne.

I'd love to head to Europe for a break (it's the fashionable thing to do right now apparently - I'm looking at you, Len, Mot, Chris and Nyree) but that'd involve at least three weeks off work. One of the joys of small business is that a three week holiday isn't likely in the near future (I'm assured the up-side of small business involves rolling around, Scrooge-McDuck style, in a vault full of money).

So on a cold winter afternoon in Perth, I was thinking of other places I could be...

Tell me about your holidays, past or planned.

Spanitalian Hot Chocolate

My previously subdued love of hot chocolate was awakened on my last trip to Melbourne when I discovered the molten chocolate joy that is Italian Hot Chocolate at L'aperitivo's in Elsternwick. Since then I've been trying to track down one in Perth (with no luck yet) or to find the chocolate mix that cafes use to make it (no luck there either).

My Dad did some researching on Google the other week and found a recipe for Spanish hot chocolate which sounded close enough to warrant some experiments. This tracks with things I've been hearing about the thick hot chocolate that's served up with doughnut-style things called churros that's reportedly worth the cross-world trek to a market in Spain. (Google for info)

We've tried making it once before with reasonably good results, so we gave it another go last night as a birthday dessert. It works pretty well, though getting the not-quite-set consistency right is hit and miss.

Anyway, on with the recipe...

Advance warning

Every year I get harangued by friends for not advertising my impending birthday. 2005 will be different.

Well, it would have been, if only I'd been more organised. But two days' notice is still advance warning, right?

Watch this space: come Wednesday the 15th I'll be older and have lots of wise, learned, scholarly things to say. Or I might just continue posting photos and avoid writing those pesky words.

That Music Meme

The other week I got bored one night and rearranged my cds into a kind of colour spectrum. Discovery #1: Most of my cds have either black or white spines. Discovery #2: I clearly have too much time on my hands.

And now, onto that music meme that mik sent me...

Cases

Another photo from Sculpture by the Sea over summer, which feels like so long ago.

We're definitely in winter now -- the Perth forecast uses the word 'showers' eleven times.

Jellyfish

I'm still clearing the backlog of photos from my break from posting over Summer... Here's one from the Sculptures by the Sea at Cottesloe.

The big news of the day is Apple's planned switch from IBM's PowerPC chips over to Intel, with new machines making the transition during 2006-07. We've got some swanky new G5's here at work so I'm not too phased, but I wonder how much the two year transition will affect their sales?

Knowing there are new, radically different machines coming would you buy a new Mac now, or wait?

Nerdish

I woke up this morning with the vague impression that at some point in the night I'd dreamed about comment spam.

Kill me now.
