Listen like...
I ended up having an interesting conversation with some friends the other day that basically centred around whether everyone there listens to the lyrics or sound of new songs.
I'm wholeheartedly in the music-first camp, usually deciding if I like a song or not based almost entirely on the sound of it. The lyrics stick in my head after a few repeats, but I don't really pay attention to them, and without the music I'd struggle to remember most of them.
What about you? Lyrics or sound?

sound first, lyrics second for me.

sound first definitely. I mean have you tried learning the lyrics to Dave Matthews Live at Luther College?

can you straddle the fence?
i'd prefer to listen to a song with great music and crap lyrics than the reverse. but for some strange reason i always try and read the lyrics to a new album before listening to it. the ultimate is when the feel of the music supports the sentiment of the lyrics.

Hm... that's a little tough. I play around with poetry from time to time so words and lyrics to me are a bit important in terms of liking a song but I also love music. I don't think I could ever really pick.

Apart from a few notable exceptions (maybe Josh Pyke, the Finns) sound first, all the way.
Images too. Composition and overall feel first, then individual content. Like your picture of the day, beautiful!
I love it with any art - when the emotion grabs you before you have time to consider composition, then you take a step forward (or back?) and it draws you further in with the detail.

Depends on the song. 77% by the herd was lyrics, National Anthem by Radiohead was music. So Either or and Both - bad lyrics can kill a song as well as bad music.
