Cottesloe Sunset

Another 1-pixel-stretch pic, this time it's last Saturday's sunset at over Cottesloe Beach.

And on the theme of the other day's rant about good design, check out the BBC's recent search for the Best British Design since 1900.

I have a weakness for the Underground map (as you may have noticed) and the Penguin paperback (and how can you go past the über-British Aston Martin or the Jag).

Update: Turns out there's a book on Penguin's cover designs available.

I have always loved the Penguin book designs - a delightful marriage of function AND form. (I too prefer function over form - one only has to look at my shoes to discover the bland aesthete that I am). And I enjoy the history and the changes in Penguin books and the little Penguin himself - being an avid hoarder of books, I have a full array of how Penguin has changed since it started.

And how can you not love the simplicity of colour codes for types of books - especially because purple equals the true classics (Homer, Aeschylus et al). The only ones I haven't like so far are the 'New Classics' silver books - probably something about what books are chosen as well!

He he he, I love the underground map too.

It's funny, because looking at the train maps stuck to perth trains I noticed it is done in the same style. I can just imagine Transpert going to the underground designer, asking them to layout Perth's map, and the deisnger wondering where the rest of it was...

That 1 pixel stretch idea is very cool.

Myles - Yeah, I know... I always find it entertaining that Transperth's maps have adopted the exact style of the Underground (designed to simplify a confusing spaghetti of criss-crossed lines) despite us having all of, what, 4.5 train lines, all coming from the one central city station?

Dan - Thanks! I had the idea ages ago and finally got around to it late last year. Looking back I think I might've been subconsciously influenced by Bryan Boyer's Aisle of Averages flickr set @ http://www.flickr.com/photos/bryan/sets/584137/

I used to live from 1976 to 1981 2 minutes from
cottesloe beach at Deane Street, it was a wunderful time and thinking about it makes me homesick - despite the fact I`m a german and living now back in Germany - seeing the picutures I could cry -
it was the most "moving - time" in my / our live-
unfortunately my wife died in 2001 and I´m happy
for every hour we used to life there.
