The Wheel

Somewhere through the Scottish fog we saw the vague silhouette of the Falkirk Wheel, an engineering marvel that deserves to be better known.

It's problem solving that's equal parts amazingly clever and brilliantly simple. In short, it's a lift that allows boats to move up or down an eight-storey drop between two canals in four minutes and with remarkably little energy. And it manages to look weirdly futuristic while doing so.

If you're ever near Falkirk (between Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland) it's worth checking out. If you're not, there's always wikipedia.
